MIT instructors share their teaching approaches in a special section of their OCW courses, called “Instructor Insights.” In these sections, you’ll find instructors discussing topics of interest to education professionals, such as course design, active learning, and engaging learners.
The year may be coming to a close, but we’ve recently published 11 courses with new Instructor Insights—and they are super fresh! Below are a few highlights:
- 5.111SC Principles of Chemical Science features nine video Instructor Insights by Professor Catherine Drennan on helping students find their passion for chemistry, spotlighting contemporary chemistry in an introductory course, using clicker competitions in class, promoting active participation during lectures, and using humor to engage students.
- 16.842 Fundamentals of Systems Engineering has Professor Olivier de Weck’s eleven video Instructor Insights about teaching a SPOC (Small Private Online Course), engaging students in the design process through the annual CanSat competition, assessing student work completed as teams, and teaching with concept questions.
- 21G.027 Asia in the Modern World: Images & Representations shares Professor Shigeru Miyagawa’s eight video Instructor Insight on transforming residential education with open digital content, visualizing cultures, flipping the classroom, and using visual materials to teach 21st century skills.
- 5.07SC Biological Chemistry I features ten video Instructor Insights, contributed by Professors John Essigmann and JoAnne Stubbe, on teaching central pathways to help students understand metabolism, using oncology applications to motivate students to study metabolic biochemistry, and advice for the next teaching generation.
- RES.3-002 Collaborative Design and Creative Expression with Arduino Microcontrollers and RES.3-003 Learn to Build Your Own Videogame with the Unity Game Engine and Microsoft Kinect have co-instructors Kyle Keane’s and Andrew Ringler’s insights about teaching collaboration through “designed-to-fail” hands-on projects during an IAP period.
